A good mix of spears, executioners/black guard....supported by a cauldron BSB. Then a few units of crossbows and a couple hydras as well as a caster lord. That should be 2k+ :)

They are still a very flexible army with a lot of viable builds. It kinda depends on your play style and what models you like. I have a hard time thinking off the top of my head of anything in that army that is just plain bad.

Nice Jon, since you just named the list I played against you the other night. Hah.

I'd go with 3 blocks of about 30 infantry, a mix of core and elites, especially if you're buffed by shadow magic. Mind razor is awesome for spearmen, witch elves or whichever.

With the FAQ from 8th ed, the cauldron of blood is even better than before, which makes executioners better than ever. It is also nice that you get to attack from ranks.

Black guard are still good, but not like before. Many DE players are leaving them at home in favor of executioners or cheaper multi-attack guys who you can buff.

The OP model is the unkillable/unbreakable dreadlord on a pegasus to tie up the horde units while the rest of your army destroys things.

Not very well, honestly.. bolt throwers only have 2 wounds, and with the increase in large bricks, it's much harder to kill units with shooting. You need combat bricks in this edition.

You need combat bricks, however it is not to say that 40 crossbows won't help out the cause!

The upside to the shooting DE army is that a crossbowman with a shield is 11 points. You get a WS 4 model with a 5+/6+ save. They won't win combats for you, but 20 crossbowmen with a standard and musician can do a lot in helping a combat with a flank charge. They are defensive enough not to die faster than your combat troops and gain you some needed combat res. BUT, they are not the game winners they were before, especially since the bolt throwers are now way less useful. You need some more magic to fill the roll that used to be filled by bolt throwers.

Lore choice might depend on your opponent, how mobile your casters are, and what their force looks like. There is definitely no one right answer.
