Kings of War Game size?

Postby DrunkenSamurai » Sun Jul 12, 2015 10:07 am

For you long time KoW players what would be a typical or standard point size for a game? I have not read through the 2nd ed rules but the lists do not seem to have any comp restrictions. Is this a build it the way you want it game?

On page 23 of the new rules it outlines a comp restriction. You can have as many regiments you want and for each regiment you can take on War Engine or 1 Monster or 1 Hero.

Ok the 2ed rules should have comp but basicaly its:

Ok your army can include as many hordes as you like. Hordes give access to the following, x4 troop formations (the smallest formations) 1 warmachine, 1 hero AND 1 monster.

For every regiment you take you get access to the following, 1 warmachine or 1 monster or 1 hero.

Horde= 10 frontage x 4 ranks. 40 figures. (think 20 mm x 20mm bases like GW) For large infantry six figures (4mm x 40mm) 3 frontage 2 ranks.

Regiment= 5 x 4 (think again for 20mm x20mm base sizes GW) so 20 figures.

Cavalry are on 25mm x 50mm rectangles (again like GW)

troop = 5
regiment = 10 (5 frontage x 2 rank)
Horde = 20 ( ten frontage x 2 ranks)

large cavalry can be on a 50mm x 50mm or 50mm x 100mm (depending on what thier stat line notes say)

Chariots are on 50mm x 100mm

large creaturtures 50mm x 100mm or 50 x 50mm)

It explains in the rule better than I can here. I could show you in person what it would look like. ONe thing to remember is that there are no casualty removals in KOW. The formations or Units take wounds until they waver or break. ONce break happens the whole unit is pulled from the table. The actual foot print of the unit is what is important here but the figure count less so. For instance say you wanted to have a horde of human shield wall from the Kingdom of Man army. 40 figures right? Not exactly. Say you wanted to model it with 30 figures and make a cool little diorama. You could glue the 30 figure diorama on 200mm x 80mm movement tray. It would have the same foot print as a horde but used with less figures.

Clear as mud?

http://www.manticgames.com/free-rules.html Page three and towar the end should answer any questions as well. There are also some free army lists as well. Keep in mind the complete army lists will be in the rule book. But each list has enough units to make things interesting. For you having historical figures may I suggest using the kingdom of man lists?

Although Im not a fan of this new way of army selection, it is still fairly simple and pretty much the rest of the rules havent changed at all. The main focus was the reconfiguration of the army point layout which are all wonky IMO. The other big thing was unit specialities, which Im not happy with either. Take Men for example, Cav used to have a continuous Crushing Strength of 2+ which IMO seems right for being on horses. NOW, its changed to Thunderous Charge (2+)and it only applies on the attack if moved more than 3 inches. Once you're in contact, the horse basically doesnt account for damage anymore, its just the man swinging.

Point wise, 1k is good to demo and practice with and going forward, they're looking at 2k as a standard. The last 3 years at Adepticon it was 1800 but with the point structure now, 2k is pretty close to 1800.

Also, all the main list will be available for free, not sure if Wilk made that apparent. Plus their are fan lists and most of the gws might be listed by the end of the year.

Horses lose momentum when they are smashed into the enemy. Of course they won't have that extra oomph if they don't charge forward a requisite distance. It makes sense. It would be upsetting of they always had that rule imo.

By assuming the charge is over and now they arent a threat means you basically ignore the horse even exists. Its not a car-its not like its running out of gas. Its alive and is still an extension of you as a weapon.

Men were notoriously weak in KoW, very few good units with the exception of Cav. (Knights).
Im not saying all rules are perfect but from what I use to play to what i saw them do to this, its a hard pill to swallow.

Ay best they would buck some, hardly thunderous charge. Maybe crushing blow 1 at best.

Cavalry are a shock troop made to smash a weakened formation with a final blow. The rules in the lists reflect the use over movement tactics. If your cav get charged your effed. It should be that way.

Anyhow. There are more changes than just list changes. There are hight levels taking away true line of sight. So who wants to play? Darn it I'm not paint g these goblins for nothing
